Freedom
of Speech, Association and Political Activity
If you are employed by an agency of the State or a municipal government,
your employer may not prevent you from exercising your First Amendment
rights to free speech, association and political activity.
Certain forms of workplace speech are protected by
the law, including opposition to discrimination, sexual harassment, and
violations of the wage and health and safety laws.
In California, it is illegal even for a private
employer to
coerce or influence or attempt to coerce or influence its employees
through or by means of threat of discharge or loss of employment to
adopt or follow or refrain from adopting or following any particular
course or line of political action or political activity.
